VIEWPOINT. Rise of Concerns About AI: Reflections and Directions

Will the prevalence of Artificial Intelligence only bring vices or are there advantages? How should the advantages and dangers be balanced?

This report highlights that Artificial Intelligence (AI) has become commonplace in our lives. It shows that, in the long term, advances in machine-intelligence will be beneficial for healthcare, education, transportation, commerce, and the advancement of science and that AI can help provide answers to longstanding questions in neurobiology, psychology, and philosophy. However, it argues that the computer-science community must take a lead in exploring and addressing the opportunities, concerns, and ramifications of the increasing prevalence of AI in our societies. It must address the potential of automation to disrupt the economic sphere, as well as recognise AI’s potentially dangerous capacities. Generally, five classes of risks are identified in the report: bugs, cybersecurity, the “Sorcerer’s Apprentice,” shared autonomy, and socioeconomic impacts.

How can the science community be supported in reflecting on these pressing issues? This article might help you to start or continue thinking about this topic of paramount importance.
