Will the changing climate hit everyone on the planet equally? Is money somehow part of the equation or not?
Although the whole planet is dealing with Climate Change and has to carry the effects it has and will have on our societies, this UN article tracks the ways in which the negative impact of Climate Change causes “the disadvantaged groups to suffer disproportionately.” Islam and Winkel suggest that those who find themselves in disadvantaged groups to begin with, will see an “increase in exposure” to the negative outcomes of Climate Change, will be more “susceptible to the damage caused”, and will have more difficulty “recovering” from it.
This analysis draws us to observe that money is a part of the equation. Therefore, its conclusions challenge us to see that more advantaged groups must act not only with their own interests in mind but also with the interests of those in less privileged situations.
